File: lvcomsx.exe

This is the Communications Manager for Logitech's QuickCam video web camera, one of the world's most recognized webcam brands, elected in October 2010 as one of Time Magazine's Top 100 Gadgets of All Time. The product line was started by Connectix in 1994 and acquired by Logitech in 1998. The Communications Manager is normally installed along with drivers from QuickCam products and runs in the background, providing additional features such as the ability to use the webcam with video streaming applications. Terminating the process will cause problems with the webcam, including certain controls being greyed-out, and is not recommended. When consulting Logitech customer support about software online, the camera's part number is needed because Logitech cameras with the same name can be supported by different software versions. Some side-effects have been reported from this module which some people find annoying, such as a loud sound at system shutoff, or preventing the keyboard or mouse from working if the webcam is not physically attached. This module has been suspected of acting as spyware by waiting until the screensaver activates, thus assuming the PC is idle, to gather personal information about the user's system and transmit it to Backweb for marketing use by Logitech and other Backweb partners. Logitech support consultants have disputed this. Windows Vista users should be aware that Logitech QuickCam software was reported in 2008 to be having multiple unresolved issues on Vista systems. If you want a detailed security rating about your lvcomsx.exe (and all other running background processes) read the following user opinions, and download the free trial version of Security Task Manager. http://www.neuber.com/taskmanager/process/lvcomsx.exe.html

Note: Any malware can be named anything - so you should check where the files of the running processes are located on your disk. If a "non-Microsoft" .exe file is located in the C:\Windows or C:\Windows\System32 folder, then there is a high risk for a virus, spyware, trojan or worm infection! Check it out!

It's a background file that operates when your screensaver goes on. It sends information about the user to third party servers. Dunno if it's harmfull, but IF you want to keep your privacy better disable it. Martijn
This lvcomsx.exe is known as spyware or also called a parasite. While your PC is idle (aka: screen saver kicks on), lvcomsx.exe gathers personal information from your computer and sends it via network to Logitech and a few others that are partners with backweb services. Backweb services (a group that collects your personal information and sells it to many partners). Partners can be any company that pays money for backweb code to be installed with programs and drivers like all of the Logitech products. kevin kratsch (descrption from start up inspector)

Bothers me to have something running and using resources with out knowing it's full purpose. Mike
It is a highly irritating file. There is no real need for this file. It is safe to delete and will not affect your webcam. Carlos
Adds functionality for bundled Logitech cam software. If you only use your for, e.g. MSN, you don't need it. It seems to get installed even if you just install the driver, or doesn't get removed if you remove the bundled software. Most annoying, it causes a 'Default Beep' at shutdown. Just disable it using a startup utility. Tom

If you install a QUICKCAM 5000 with it's application and then drop the software to keep only the driver, you're camera will work without problems, but an error msg will pop on startup saying that lvcom can't start. I'm looking for some way to stop that msg. RaRgY

All it is a gay piece of shit that runs in your back ground... put it this way, at start up, anything that starts up under your username doesnt need to run to keep you computer running, so turn the piece of shit off... suicide_rune

This information definitely applies to the Logitech QuickCam driver version 8.3.0.1096 for the QuickCam Pro 4000 and may also apply to other versions. LVCOMSX.EXE is totally inessential, and certainly slows down boot times. I have removed it from my startup path and renamed it and the camera has continue to operate normally. I think that on some systems LVCOMSX.EXE actually does cause crashes and longer slowdowns. While it is not "dangerous" per se I would recommend removing it from startup and renaming it. CamTester

Logitech File. Setup something to monitor traffic in and out of computer, along with what was causing the activity. This file, sent data about fifteen times within a 24hr period. All this, without using the camera at all, and not having it connected at all before the test. Free Willy

it is part of the logitech camera software - it is unnecessary, but simply removing it from MS config does not keep it from running. It gets loaded through svchost.exe unless you rename it. Gordon James

From Labtech webcam driver, very annoying cos when I shut the computer down, it makes a "error" sound, I have now deinstalled the stupid thing. ET
To disable permanently: Start - Run - regedit- navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run. Then Delete the LVCOMSX entry and close the Reg Editor. Gambino
Very suspect! My PC has nothing running at startup except firewall. Today while browsing "My Computer", I accidentally clicked "My Logitech Pictures" before continuing to browse where I'd intended. Some time later (maybe 1/2 hour?), my firewall popped up a message to say that Firefox was trying to access the Internet! A quick check of processes revealed "lvcomsx" still running, attempting to send who-knows-what to the Internet! This even though my Logitech cam is not even connected! Eon
if switched off, camera controll field settings are greyed out/don't work, evth. else still works burn

"It provides extra functionality for Logitech multimedia webcam devices. It is non-essential to the running of the system." Tyler Morrison
It comes bundles with the logiteck QuickCam driver. Edge
Neutral because the LVCOMSX.EXE gives when close the PC an unusual noise. gives when close the computer an unusual noise, something as "DONK." I open the task manager and close (stop) the process LVCOMSX.EXE. I search long for this problem, the time that I not know what the problem was had I without success contact with Logitech. I found this very strange, but it is possible that there was no solution for. Anyway, it is no problem to blok the process but only when you close the pc. Jeannette Masiala Sungu
