Process name: Microsoft Internet Explorer Runtime Utilities
Product: Windows Internet Explorer
Company: Microsoft (microsoft.com)
Beginning at Version 7 of Microsoft Internet Explorer, installation of IE on a Microsoft Windows system adds this Dynamic Link Library (DLL) executable file to the C:\Windows\system32 folder, where it becomes essential to the operation of the Windows Graphical Shell, including the Start Menu, Taskbar, Desktop and File Manager. If it disappears or fails to work there are at least sixteen other DLL files in the "system32" directory that are statically linked to it and the entire Windows Graphical Shell fails to function. Repairing the problem is simple in concept, (copying a fresh iertutil.dll file into the directory), and potentially difficult in execution because of the need to use the Task Manager to access the file directories and the inability to browse the Internet or download a new file from it. Microsoft's support website contains information which indicates this file was being harmed by installing IE-8 on Windows XP-based machines.Although it is often called the "Runtime Utility" for IE, this library actually contains multiple utility functions. A Dynamic Link Library (DLL) file is an executable file which cannot be started by itself; it exists to be called by other executable files, sometimes through function names and sometimes through ordinal (numeric) references only. Microsoft created this utility library name when it began separating Internet Explorer from Windows, instead of its predecessor, called SHLWAPI. If you want a detailed security rating about your iertutil.dll (and all other running background processes) read the following user opinions, and download the free trial version of Security Task Manager.
Note: Any malware can be named anything - so you should check where the files of the running processes are located on your disk. If a "non-Microsoft" .exe file is located in the C:\Windows or C:\Windows\System32 folder, then there is a high risk for a virus, spyware, trojan or worm infection! Check it out!

If it is removed you will not be able to start Explorer.exe Niklas Aldén
If it is removed, it will cause your system to not work. You can not pull up the start menu. Everything has to be done through task manager and you cannot do a restore. You have to remove internet explorer as a whole to repair your system. Susan

This EXE that Microsoft Internet Explorer 8 produced tried to read my screen 8 times and hook my keyboard 2 times in less then a hour. The only reason I noticed this is because SnoopFree caught it. Not very nice of Microsoft to put something like this in their Internet Explorer. Alex
