From Berkeley Univ. Replaced SETI at Home. BOINC can run other programs Rosetta for protien folding. If you don't know what it is, you do have a problem. You or someone with access to your compter should have installed it.

If it doesn't respond to Add/Remove Programs command, may be a Trojan, in which case it's been known to steal processing power. I have not heard of privacy violations involving BOINC, though there are unscrupulous or foolish people who try to increase their rankings in the BOINC community by tricking people into installing it under false pretenses. BOINC is meant to be a tool that facilitates support for research projects that need computer processing power. Search on Internet for 'BOINC' if you need more information.

In simple English, boinc.exe is the driver for the World Community Grid. Anyone (that includes you) can join the Grid, allowing it to use the spare time and space on their computer to be used for humanitarian research. It doesn't come with Windows, so someone or something MUST have loaded it. If you haven't loaded it, be suspicious; if you have, good on you..
